Perth secures major lawn bowls event
Perth is to host Bowls Australia’s elite lawn bowls festival, the Nationals, as part of a newly signed two-year agreement.
The Western Australian Government, through Tourism WA, has secured the Nationals for Western Australia in 2023 and 2026, with the first event scheduled to take place from 6th to 20th October and with contests to be held at various select venues across Perth.
The 14-day lawn bowls festival combines six national bowls competitions, and is set to attract a legion of competitors, officials and supporters to Perth.
The six lawn bowls competitions hosted as part of the Nationals span all ages and include bowls champions from across Australia.
More than 1,000 interstate visitors are expected to visit Perth for the Nationals.
The most recent survey from the National Bowls Census shows there are just under 700,000 lawn bowls players across Australia, with more than 54,000 players in Western Australia.
WA Tourism Minister Roger Cook notes "securing this two-year agreement is a big win for Western Australia as it will bring top-class lawn bowls competitors and spectators to our State to showcase their skills.
"Attracting mass participation sporting contests to Western Australia is a key priority of the WA Government and Tourism WA, as these events give interstate travellers a time sensitive reason to visit our State.
"2023 is shaping up to be a huge year of sport in WA, with a record number of events supported by the WA Government, through Tourism WA, and we look forward to securing even more exciting events into the future."
