Perth creatives want an inner-city space to live and work

The City of Perth has undertaken a landmark study to ‘make space for culture’ in its inner-city area in which more than 1000 artists, singers, actors, dancers, musicians, directors and filmmakers were asked what would attract them to live and work in Perth’s inner city.

It was revealed 84% of surveyed artists and creatives want a liveable working space in the city’s inner-city neighbourhoods.

The study includes contribution from four inner city local governments – City of Perth, Town of Victoria Park, City of South Perth and City of Vincent.

The findings from the study have informed the process of the Economic Development Strategy which is currently under development.

City of Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas advises “artists and creatives add vibrancy, beauty, richness and character to the communities they live in.

“The aim of the study was to get input from creatives that can help the City find more performance, exhibition, creation, production and administrative spaces where creative people can work and live.”

The study identifies key opportunities and policy mechanisms that the four councils could employ to increase sustainable, affordable, and long-term arts accommodation and creative maker spaces across inner city neighbourhoods.
