Penola Amateur Swimming Club benefits from South Australian sports club development program

Located near the South Australian/Victorian border, the Penola Amateur Swimming Club is the latest community sports club to benefit from South Australia's STARCLUB initiative.

From not having reviewed its constitution for 10 years, to realising it needed to freshen up and sharpen up, and to then doing something about it, the Club has become a place where quality coaches and officials work alongside valued volunteers in a safe and welcoming environment.

According to the official papers signing off on its STARCLUB membership, once it committed to the STARCLUB process the Penola club displayed an absolute willingness to tick off everything on the program’s checklist.

That meant:

• Reviewing and overhauling all its policies
• Making sure all coaches and committee members completed anti-doping and match-fixing training
• Committing to reviewing its constitution annually
• Creating more opportunities for professional development for volunteers
• Making sure it has an ‘excellent’ disability action plan

A key factor in helping the club achieve its goals was support of its members, with its STARCLUB membership approval papers saying that the club has “wonderfully hardworking committee and band of volunteers.”

The free STARCLUB - Club Development Program has been designed for use by sport and active recreation clubs of all sizes. Specific to current South Australian legislation, the information it offers is updated regularly to reflect state and national best practice in club development.

The introduction of the STARCLUB Recognition Program dates from 2015, with it being introduced to back clubs in become better recognised by the South Australian Government and other organisations that value the role well-run clubs can play in our community.
