Parks Victoria Chief Executive steps down

Dr Bill Jackson has announced he will step down from his position as Chief Executive of Parks Victoria, after five years in the job.

Dr Jackson said his time with the well-respected and world-class park service was a rewarding challenge, stating “I am immensely proud of my time at Parks Victoria and the many friends I have made and achievements we have shared. Parks Victoria plays a vital role as an environmental leader in Victoria and is recognised around the world as a champion of the Healthy Parks Healthy People approach.”

Dr Jackson said it was a difficult decision but that he was looking forward to the next stage in his career.

Commenting on Dr Jackson’s departure, Parks Victoria Chairman Andrew Fairley stated “Bill Jackson has done a terrific job in leading and reforming Parks Victoria for the future. His integrity, intelligence and determination, together with his significant scientific skills will leave a great legacy for the organisation.

“We hope to be able to continue to draw on his internationally-recognised environmental expertise in the future.”

Dr Jackson said Parks Victoria had become a resilient organisation in the face of budget pressures and limited resources.

He added “we have undergone a comprehensive reform process to become a more customer-focused, efficient and professional organisation – from culture to systems to embracing new technology. I believe we are now an employer of choice that delivers great benefits to Victoria’s parks, which are some of the most accessible in the world.”

Dr Jackson made special mention of Parks Victoria staff, explaining “I feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to work with Parks Victoria staff and our many supporters.

“Our organisation is comprised of many passionate people and builds on a proud tradition. It continues to play a key role on the frontline, working with communities and industry for the better management of the state’s parks and waterways.”

Dr Jackson said he would continue as Chief Executive through to June to support a smooth transition.

Prior to his appointment to Parks Victoria, Dr Jackson was Deputy Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Over a period of 13 years, Dr Jackson held various positions including Director of the Global Program and Head of Forest Conservation.
