Panelling Innovation at TRAC
The high humidity and corrosive chlorine environments of aquatic centres present major challenges to building owners and designers who want a thermally stable, high performance building with a long life span. Historically steel panels have not been suitable and conventional insulation techniques have proven to be highly unstable given their permeability and inability to resist the high humidity and corrosive impact from chlorine in these environments.
Mindful of this, architect David Hood chose Kingspan KS1000 RW Insulated Trapezoidal Roof panel in Colorbond Woodland Grey complimented by Kingspan Architectural Wall Panels in Micro-Rib profile (KS1000 MR) in Colorbond Citi when designing the Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre (TRAC). Both utilise Kingspanâs new Aquasafe liner â the Aquasafe coating is a specially developed 200mm plastisol layer which is used on the internal liner. The combination of the non corrosive Aquasafe surface with the closed-cell, rigid PIR insulation core and purpose engineered panel joints, result in an impermeable barrier.
One of many innovations introduced at TRAC (which was featured in the January/February 2009 of Australasian Leisure Management), David Hood comments that âKingspan Insulated Panels are a sound solution for this type of project. They satisfied all our requirements with ease. The insulated panel technology provides a pre-finished product â they are quick to install, have good insulation properties to aid in compliance with building regulations, and with the secret fix installation provide clean lines which adds to the overall aesthetic effect. The Aquasafe liner provides a protective internal skin that will resist attack from the internal pool environment, and all this is backed by a 15 year guarantee.?
âThe Kingspan panels allowed the structural design of the building to use less supporting steel, leaving the internal environment with clean lines and minimal internal structural steel exposure. The spaning capabilities of the Kingspan panels allowed us to design an efficient structurally sound model, which gave us savings in terms of time and money spent on onsite materials and construction. â
âThe Kingspan panels are one of the major elements that contribute to the aesthetic success of the design of internal pool environment and to the external streetscape. The internal flush finish of the protective Aquasafe liner created the desired clean, crisp internal finish that we were looking for. The external sweeping roof lines with the wide ribbed Kingspan RW profile allow the roof to fold and rap down the building façade creating the desired architectural form.?
âWe would favour the Kingspan panel system over conventional individual building element systems for their reliable insulation properties, long self-supported clear spans, concealed and expressed jointing options, cost savings as a result of ease and speed of installation and the overall aesthetic.?
âThe design innovation, pool operations and centre management of the centre are being celebrated as a benchmark design for aquatic design in Australia.?
The Kingspan roof and walls panels, were installed by Hales and Lunn. Commenting on Kingspan Lee Hendrie of Hales and Lunn says: âKingspan insulated panel systems were great to work with and gave us a very modern and smart look. They are ideal for a whole range of projects including commercial and industrial buildings as well as shopping centres. They would work well for all buildings that need to be insulated.?
Kingspan insulated panel systems comprise the external finish, bonded to a rigid insulation core with pre-finished internal liner offering an all-in-one package offering an effective alternative to traditional multi part systems. The high performance FM Approved Polyisocyanurate (PIR) core offers up to twice the thermal performance of most conventional insulation materials. Combined with the quality eng
