Opening of Christchurch Metro aquatic and sport facility delayed for another two years
Delays in the construction of Christchurch's Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre look set to delay its opening until 2025.
As reported today by 1News, the latest delay in what will be New Zealand's largest indoor aquatic and recreation facility has been caused by challenging ground conditions and programming changes, along with a continued shortage of construction workers.
Ōtākaro Limited Chief Executive John Bridgman advised that the delay will not affect its cost, advising that it's a fixed price contract "and any variations beyond the $317 million already allocated will be worked through and agreed on with the contractor at a later date".
Originally scheduled to open in 2017, the Christchurch City Council-owned facility will be powered by New Zealand’s first Waste-Water Heat Recovery System.
It will include a 10-lane competition pool, a large diving pool, five hydroslides (waterslides), a warm water pool/spa/sauna/steam room, multi-purpose indoor courts, an aquatic sensory space and high-performance sports centre.
