NSW Government releases Smart Public Spaces Guide

Aiming to help providers and designers deliver improved visitor experiences for the users of public space, the NSW Department of Planning and Environment has launched the Smart Public Spaces Guide.

Introducing the role of technology in the creation and improvement of high-quality public spaces and the delivery of better public space outcomes for communities, the Guide forms part of the NSW Great Public Spaces Toolkit.

The NSW Smart Places Guide provides more information on the steps needed to harness the power of data and smart technologies to deliver more resilient places that respond to the community’s needs. It also includes helpful links to technical guidelines, policies and standards.

Also available in Arabic, Chinese and Vietnamese, the guides and resources in the Toolkit include:

The Great Public Spaces Guide - an introduction to the meaning of place and the elements that contribute to creating a great public facility, open space or street.

The illustrated Guide outlines an approach for how spaces become places, to help communities, industry, local and state government create great public spaces that are full of life.

The Guide aims to inform future planning, design and investment, building a case for long-term change. It supports the Evaluation Tool and the NSW Public Spaces Charter.

The COVID Safe Public Space Guide - which builds on the COVID Safe Summer Plan and lessons learned since the start of the pandemic and, supporting current public health orders, offers updated practical tools, advice, resources and ideas to help keep NSW’s public spaces COVIDSafe.

Given the changing situation and public health orders please readers of the COVID Safe Public Space Guide are also referred to the latest information available on the NSW Government’s COVID-19 website.
