North Queensland Games promises to be largest multi-sport event in regional Australia

The North Queensland Games offer a platform for aspiring athletes to showcase their talent and there is still time for athletes and enthusiasts to register and be part of this much-anticipated event.

Cairns Regional Council and the North Queensland Sports Foundation (NQSF) have partnered to deliver the North Queensland Games which are being held in Cairns from 3rd to 6th May.

With more than 3,000 participants across 26 sports, the 2024 NQ Games promises to be the largest multi-sport event in regional Australia.

Whether you are a seasoned competitor or someone looking to revel in the thrill of the games, there's a spot waiting at the NQ Games.

Adding to the excitement is a stellar line-up of ambassadors who embody the spirit of sportsmanship and dedication.

Among them is local high-profile sporting identity Libby Cook-Black, whose journey from the netball court to the footy field has been nothing short of inspiring.

Her passion as an advocate and mentor for women in sport earned her the Women’s Recognition Award at last month’s (March) Cairns Regional Council International Women’s Day awards. She was also highly commended in the Woman of the Year category.

Cook-Black shared "being part of the North Queensland Games is not just about competition, it's about celebrating the spirit of community and the power of sports to transform lives.”

Joining Cook-Black as an ambassador are other well-known individuals whose achievements and dedication to their respective sports have earned them widespread admiration.

These include:

• Joyce Lester OAM, who has represented Australia in softball at multiple Olympics and World Championships.

• Grant “Scooter” Patterson, the beloved Paralympian known for his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering spirit, who continues to inspire people in and out of the pool as he gears up for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.

• Leah Rueben, a rising star in the boxing world, who went from being a troubled teen to a national champions and now advocated for better youth mental health services and support.

• Matt Smith, a former professional basketball player turned passionate advocate for local sports development.

NQSF Chief Executive Stephen Farrell said the Games will have a significant impact on the region adding "The North Queensland Games serve as a testament to the power of sports in fostering unity and community pride.

“With the 2032 Olympics on the horizon, the Games provide a unique platform for aspiring athletes to showcase their talent and pave the way for future Olympians.

“The economic and social impact of the Games on the region is expected to be substantial, with an estimated influx of competitors providing a welcome injection to the local economy.

“Beyond financial gains, the Games offer invaluable opportunities for athlete development and community engagement.”
