Night swimming beach opens to public in Dubai
The Dubai Municipality has open the United Arab Emirate’s first ‘night swimming beach’ at the Umm Suqeim 1 Beach, sited a kilometre north of the iconic Burj Al Arab tower.
Previously, Dubai Municipality and Dubai Police, the two entities in charge of beach safety, had restricted night swimming on Dubai beaches on account of safety issues.
Open from 6pm to mindnight, the change in policy follows the installation of two 12-metre solar and wind-powered ‘Smart Poles’ providing high-intensity lighting on the beach after sunset.
Night swimming will be allowed on a 125-metre stretch on the beach and 30 metres into the sea.
Open to residents and tourists, swimmer safety is also backed by at team of 84 lifeguards.
Commenting on the initiative, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of the Dubai Municipality stated “this is going to boost Dubai’s image as a tourist destination.
“Lifeguards will be at service till midnight, when the smart poles will also switch off.”
Lootah also declared the beach as a ‘Smart Beach’ as it now boasts three ‘smart’ elements - ‘smart’ poles, ‘smart’ changing rooms and ‘smart’ palms that provide free Wi-Fi service.
