Next stages announced for Canberra Theatre Centre transformation

The ACT Government has announced its investment in the next stage of the Canberra Theatre Centre transformation.

An industry partner will be engaged through an early contractor involvement (ECI) delivery model to work in partnership with Major Projects Canberra and Cultural Facilities Corporation to deliver the project.

The expanded Canberra Theatre Centre will be the centrepiece of the Civic and Cultural District as a live entertainment and hospitality destination. It will be a place where communities come together and connect through arts and events.

The current concept designs will continue to develop in this next stage.

Guided by respect for First Nations peoples, the concept design considers Connections to Country and integrates First Nations stories and knowledge into the fabric of theatre spaces.

The building exterior features large-scale window openings that change with the light from day to night and throughout the seasons. It provides panoramic views across City Hill, Lake Burley Griffin, Black Mountain and Mount Ainslie.

Inside the venue the concept design showcases warm and soft timber style finishes. Audience and performer experience are central to the design for the theatre which will be able to host major musicals, circus shows, opera and ballet Canberrans currently travel to see.
