New Zealand Theatre Month 2018 generates 615 events

Staged from Whangarei to Invercargill during the month of September, organisers have advised that the inaugural New Zealand Theatre Month have advised that the initiative generated 615 separate events comprising or focussed on New Zealand theatre, including performances, workshops, discussions, and exhibitions.

More than 118 different organisations including professional theatre companies, community theatre groups, schools and other institutions around the country backed the event, representing about 80% of known producing theatre organisations in New Zealand.

These included professional companies such as Auckland Theatre Company bringing premiere New Zealand works such as The Giltrap Audi season of Stuart Hoar’s Rendered, to distinctly Māori company Taki Rua’s Hine Kihāwai, to grassroots theatre like Theatre Whakatane’s Hang On a Minute Mate.

Appealing to New Zealanders from all walks of life, the festival catered for all, from the most committed theatre-goer to those who drawn to step foot inside the theatre for the first time.

NZ Theatre Month was prepared totally on a voluntary basis, was funded solely by supportive individuals and received no grant funding.
