New Zealand holiday parks confidence on the up

Confidence among New Zealand holiday park owners is on the rise for the first time since the end of summer.

The Holiday Parks Business Confidence Monitor for July/August shows confidence levels are at +39, indicating that 39% more respondents are currently optimistic than pessimistic.

This follows the low point of +30 recorded in June/July.

Business confidence for the next 12 months also increased by one point from June/July to +56.

The Holiday Parks Business Confidence Monitor, developed and managed by Angus & Associates*, surveys the Holiday Parks Association New Zealand's (HAPNZ) 300 members.

HAPNZ Chief Executive Fergus Brown says demand in August rose while demand for the upcoming months are also on the rise

Brown stated "36% of HAPNZ members completing the monitor felt that demand in July/August had increased compared to the same period last year. 22% of respondents expected demand to increase and 50% forecast a similar level of demand in August/September.

"Interestingly, it doesn't appear that the improving weather is influencing demand this month. The increased demand appears to be attributable to the appeal of the member's region, the domestic visitor market and appeal of holiday parks in general."

Brown explained that the domestic visitor market is identified as a leading influence of increased as well as decreased demand, suggesting that members are seeing variable demand from domestic visitors.

Key facts:

The holiday park sector provides 38% of New Zealand's commercial accommodation capacity and 20% of actual guest nights

In the past year holiday parks provided 6,325,431 guest nights

Guest nights to holiday parks are made up of approximately 32% international visitors and 68% domestic visitors

While staying at holiday parks guests contribute $733 million in direct expenditure to the local communities

Approximately $372 million (51%) of the expenditure is contributed by domestic travellers, with the balance of $362 million (49%) by international travellers
