New waterpark opens in Sulawesi
Bugis Waterpark Adventure, Indonesia's newest waterpark, has opened at Antang, Makassar in Indonesia's South Sulawesi region.
After years of planning and construction by Pt. Baruga Asrinusa Development, Kalla Group, in collaboration with Polin Waterparks and Pool Systems, and Polin's Agent in Indonesia Hardjonosigit; the seven hectare attraction is one of the largest waterparks ever built in Indonesia.
While the park's developers and designers were intent on creating a world-class waterpark, they also wanted to maintain the region's traditional cultures and values. In that way the waterpark reflects local heritage in the ride and zone names in the waterpark. These are Allabuang (harbour/port), Kampong Rilau (fishing village) and Goa Bartu Kalibampa (butterfly caves).
Bugis Marketing and Advertising Manager Adwin Pratama says that the group wanted to offer an attraction that was entertaining but also educational, stating "we wanted the park to reflect the values and philosophy of the area-to give children and their families an opportunity to learn more about the culture and language of the Bugis."
Historically, the Bugis are an Austronesian ethnic group in South Sulawesi. Although many Bugis now live in port cities like Makassar, most traditionally have been farmers who grew rice on the wet, lowland plains or who worked as traders, hunters, craftsmen or fishermen.
To maintain the historical ties to the Bugis's legacy, the park has christened its 10 attractions with appropriate Bugis-language monikers, including the Malippuno, a rafting slide (which means dizzying) based on the twisting, turning path that riders experience.
Other attractions at the park include:
Pipa Wae (Polin's Aquatube, a fast body slide that is the longest in Indonesia - 150 metres);
Matanre (Polin's Free Fall speed slide);
Tappasorong (Polin's Multi Slide with side-by-side lanes and mat-based racing);
Mattulili (body slide);
Mapettang (Polin's Black Hole, an enclosed slide employing inner tubes);
Wae Massolo (lazy river);
Kollang Ana'Ana (children's pool);
Kollang Piii' (whirlpool);
Kollang To'Lompo (main pool).
Polin Sales Manager Oz Ikiz defines the waterpark experience at Bugis as one that local residents will appreciate, as well as visitors to the region, stating "the park takes guests back to a simpler time where they can relax and forget about the rush of the modern world."
