New visitor facilities opened at Peak Charles National Park
A four-year, $190,000 redevelopment of Western Australia's Peak Charles National Park has been completed.
The redevelopment, which is part of the Western Australian Government's commitment to invest $20 million to create high-quality tourism facilities in State's national parks, aims to boost the number of affordable camp sites in national parks and reserves.
Peak Charles is 174 kilometres north-west of Esperance in the Great Western Woodlands. Towering 500 metres above the surrounding plains and one of the largest areas of intact Mediterranean-climate woodland on Earth, Peak Charles is visible for more than 50 kilometres in all directions.
Announcing the opening of the new facilities, Western Australian Environment Minister Albert Jacob explained "the new campground is part of the ... Government's ongoing investment in the quantity and quality of affordable camping sites in national parks and reserves.
"The $190,000 investment ... will ensure that visitors to Peak Charles National Park now have access to nine designated camp sites of varying sizes including space for bigger groups, caravans and other large vehicles.
"Other improvements include new shade shelters, toilets and park furniture as well as new interpretative signage throughout the park.
"Consistent with the State Government's commitment to Parks for People, the new visitor infrastructure and some of the camp sites are wheelchair accessible, ensuring all visitors have the opportunity to experience this amazing area."
The Minister said improvements at Peak Charles National Park were also part of the implementation of the Government's Biodiversity and Cultural Conservation Strategy for the Great Western Woodlands.
Construction works were carried out by the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) in collaboration with traditional custodians, the Ngadju people.
Camping at Peak Charles National Park is on a first-come basis and is best enjoyed from April to October.
As vehicle access conditions can vary depending on the season, visitors should contact the Shire of Esperance or Esperance DEC office before visiting.
