NSW declares state-wide national park closures due to extreme fire conditions

Due to the extreme fire conditions across much of New South Wales, most national parks and reserves in NSW from the Queensland border to Victoria are closed. This means no public access at all and includes tracks, trails, campgrounds and picnic areas.

This is an important measure to protect the public’s safety and to ensure no-one finds themselves trapped in a park if fire starts in the predicted extreme conditions.

With more than 120 bushfires burning across Queensland and NSW, states of emergency have been declared as bushfires bring a heightened threat to their heavily populated areas.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has warned Tuesday's bushfire risk for the Greater Sydney and Greater Hunter areas is set to be "catastrophic".

It is the first time the Sydney region has been rated at that level since the new fire danger ratings were introduced in 2009.

The RFS has issued a strong warning that "lives and homes will be at risk" as high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity combine to create fierce conditions.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian today advised that "everybody has to be on alert no matter where you are and everybody has to assume the worst and we cannot allow complacency to creep in."

A full list of the park closures and alerts, including any exceptions, is available at National Parks alerts list available here.
