New monitoring and reporting system for national parks in Tasmania
The Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service (TPWS) has developed an innovative state-wide jurisdictional performance measurement system to monitor, evaluate and report on management progress, achievements and challenges in Tasmania’s national parks and reserves.
The performance measurement system aims to aid park managers in not only preparing plans and carrying out actions to achieve stated objectives but in gaining vital feedback about performance in order to inform appropriate decisions to ensure the intended results are delivered.
To address these issues, the system is designed to deliver a variety of online performance reports that address the Tasmanian Government agency's formal responsibilities for reserve management, and also provide information and measured evidence that is relevant and meaningful to park managers, stakeholders and the broader community.
Key features of TPWS’s monitoring and reporting system are that it is outcomes-focused, evidence-based, operationally practical, and transparent to the public. By establishing performance feedback loops and supporting an adaptive management approach, the Monitoring and Reporting System facilitates informed decision-making to enhance (and/or optimise) the delivery of long-term desired outcomes. Quality public reporting on management performance benefits the community and provides transparency and accountability for the funding invested in management of Tasmania’s national parks and World Heritage Areas.
