New funding agreement supports return of Dark Mofo

Organisers of Tasmanian winter festival, Dark Mofo, are appreciative of a new state government funding agreement of $21.6 million to support the delivery of Dark Mofo through to 2027.

After having pared back its program in 2024 due to rising costs, the funding will enable Dark Mofo to make a full return in 2025.

Artistic Director Chris Twite noted "this will be another classic Dark Mofo featuring a massive line-up of international, local and Tasmanian artists.

"We're fantastically blessed here in this state to make sure that we have this cultural community that produces incredible work, and we'll continue to showcase that."

The 2025 iteration of the festival will feature all the usual festival favourites, such as the Winter Feast, the Ogoh-Ogoh, Night Mass and the Nude Solstice Swim.

Tasmanian Minister for Sports and Events, Nick Duigan noted “an iconic Tasmanian event, Dark Mofo is recognised as a world-class winter festival.

“The festival drives significant interstate and international visitation to Tasmania during our off-season, and from 2013 to 2023 attracted more than 300,000 unique visitors to Tasmania.

“It also delivers a strong return on investment to the State, significantly boosting the tourism and the hospitality sectors in the quieter winter months.

“Supporting future Dark Mofo events was a 2024 Election Commitment as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future and forms part of the Tasmanian Government’s third 100 Day Plan.”

Tourism Industry Council Tasmania Chief Executive Amy Hills said she was "incredibly happy" the festival would be making its full return adding that the state's tourism industry "did struggle a little bit" during its absence.

Dark Mofo 2025 will take place from Thursday, 5th to Sunday, 15th June 2025 with the Nude Solstice Swim on Saturday, 21st June.
