New Federal Minister for Sport named in Australian Cabinet reshuffle

Australia will have its third Sport Minister in less than 12 months as a result of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's Cabinet reshuffle.

Announced yesterday, Bridget McKenzie, the current Deputy Leader of the National Party, who has represented Victoria in the Senate since 2011, was named as Minister for Sport, Minister for Rural Health, and Minister for Regional Communications.

Senator McKenzie replaces Minister Greg Hunt in the portfolio, with Minister Hunt remaining as Health Minister.

Senator McKenzie's education background saw her study at Deakin University as a mature-age student, completing a double degree in applied science (specialising in human movement) and teaching (specialising in mathematics).

She subsequently taught physical education and mathematics for several years at Yarram Secondary College, Gippsland before lecturing in education at Monash University.

Senator McKenzie is a shooting enthusiast, and is Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Shooting.

Other leisure portfolio responsibilities are unchanged:

Trade, Tourism and Investment Minister - Steve Ciobo
Energy and Environment Minister - Josh Frydenberg
Communications and Arts Minister - Mitch Fifield
