New all-abilities playground for Malvern East

The City of Stonnington will be commencing construction of a new accessible playground at Central Park in Malvern East from 10th July.

The new playground will be filled with accessible elements such as swings, slides, a cubby, sensory structures, a water mister and sand pit – plus family-friendly features such as a drinking fountain, park furniture, toilet facility and lots of trees and garden beds.

Construction of the playground comes following an extensive community engagement program to inform the design – initially to understand community expectations for an all-abilities playground and later to share the draft for feedback.

Council used the feedback to help shape the design with equipment and play experiences to suit children, youth and adults of all abilities.

The all-abilities playground is being built on the Kingston Street side of the park, about 100 metres south of the existing playground that is also being upgraded as part of the works.

Plenty of shade trees, garden beds, a mix of soft and hard surfaces and custom play and furniture items will make this a unique and fun-filled place to stop, play and stay.

All going to plan, Council expects to see the new Central Park open before the end of the year. The opening will coincide with the opening of a similar playground at Sir Zelman Cowen Reserve – where Council is also building a new accessible playground for people of all abilities.
