National Art Gallery, Singapore on track for 2015 opening
The new National Art Gallery, Singapore remains on track to open in 2015.
Housed in Singapore's former City Hall and Supreme Court buildings, the SG$530 million plan for the new visual arts institution has been designed to position Singapore as a regional and international arts hub when complete.
Situated in the heart of the Civic District, the two important heritage buildings are being converted to house this exciting new visual arts venue, and is anticipated to be completed by 2014 and to be officially opened in 2015.
The 60,000 metre2 attraction will include two permanent core galleries dedicated to Singaporean and Southeast Asian works, as well as two rooftop civic spaces.
Work has been carried out to stabilise and strengthen the existing facades of the buildings, as well as improvements to interior elements.
With a vision of becoming a global centre for the arts, Singapore has carefully nurtured the arts and culture scene over the past two decades. The island city has witnessed increasing attendance and participation in key events and festivals such as the Singapore Biennale, Singapore Arts Festival and
Singapore Art Show. These events have helped propel Singapore onto the international scene, highlighting her prominence as an international arts hub - a place where the global arts community can come together for exchange and collaboration.
Michael Koh, Chief Executive of both the gallery and the National Heritage Board on Singpore recently explained "we are excited to see the original fabric of the buildings slowly becoming evident and we can now catch a glimpse of how these iconic buildings were constructed almost 80 years ago.
"We look forward to showcasing this slice of previously hidden history to the public when we open in 2015."
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that a new director is to be appointed to succeed Koh as Chief Executive of the National Art Gallery, Singapore, who has held the post for nearly three years.
Koh will remain as Chief Executive of the National Heritage Board following the appointment of his successor, and will continue to serve on the National Art Gallery, Singapore board.
Studio Milou Architecture and CPG Consultants are principal consultants designing and building the new National Art Gallery, Singapore.
