Mount Alexander Shire Council to develop $9.6 million indoor pool

Mount Alexander Shire Council is to develop plans for an indoor swimming pool in Castlemaine, on a different site to a controversial proposal that was abandoned three years ago.

The central Victorian local authority had plans in 2012 to build an aquatic centre on Castlemaine's Western Reserve but locals protested against the loss of open space in the town centre.

The proposal was abandoned, although a new swimming pool remained on the council's wish list.

This week, Councillors endorsed a new plan to build a $9.6 million aquatic centre, featuring a 25-metre indoor swimming pool, on the site of the town's existing outdoor pool.

Work on detailed designs is due to start next year.

The Council is aiming for the Victorian and Federal Governments to contribute up to $7.4 million towards the project.
