Melbourne retains ultimate sports city title

An international magazine has ranked Melbourne as the world's best city for hosting major sporting events.

Melbourne retained the award after previously receiving the title 18 months ago.

Sport-Business International placed Melbourne above Berlin, Sydney, London, Vancouver and Paris, in awarding the 'Ultimate Sports City' for 2008.

25 cities were initially profiled and ranked according to numbers and the importance of international and annual major sport events hosted or awarded between the period 2004-2012 in the report.

Rachael Church-Sanders, author of the report said Melbourne retained the title of ultimate sports city based on a strong performance.

Victorian Tourism Minister Tim Holding said the award confirms Melbourne is the sporting capital of the world.
