Melbourne councils participate in City Nature Challenge 2021

The City of Stonnington is teaming up with seven other Melbourne councils to join a global citizen science event to better understand the biodiversity in their local areas.

Other Melbourne councils participating in the challenge include Boroondara, Whitehorse, Knox, Manningham, Monash, Maroondah and Greater Dandenong.

City of Stonnington Mayor Kate Hely is pleased to be involved and notes “this international challenge is a great chance for our community to help build a picture of biodiversity in Stonnington.

“Stonnington’s residents are passionate about protecting their local environment and this is an opportunity to get to know it a little better. Whether that be the Glen Iris wetlands, our urban forest in Malvern East, the park at the end of your street or your own backyard.

“Anyone can contribute. All you need to do is discover and track native plants, wildlife, fungi and insects in your neighbourhood via the iNaturalist app on a smartphone."

The challenge takes place over four days from 30th April to 3rd May. During this period, Council is hosting free guided walks with local ‘friends’ groups and associations.
