Masters sport - keeping fit for generations

In just 50 days, 10,000 competitors will descend upon Adelaide to compete in the largest multi-sport event to be held in Australia in 2011 - the 13th Australian Masters Games.

For the participants, the majority of whom will be over the age of 30 years old, the Australian Masters Games is the pinnacle event of their sporting calendar. The event represents an opportunity to compete alongside the best in their age groups across 59 different sports and come home with medals and new found friendships.

Event organisers highlight that "perhaps the even greater prize that these 'mature aged' athletes take home is the legacy of health, fitness, vitality and wellbeing."

The organisers add that "the participation of older adults in the masters sport movement is extremely beneficial to the individual and the broader community as it promotes both a healthy and active lifestyle as well as a united community spirit. Providing the opportunity for a large group of people to come together and celebrate a shared interest in sport is something that the event organisers are proud to help celebrate.

"In today's society there is a lot of emphasis on keeping healthy and active, which is an issue that affects everyone. We are impressed to see how many people feel strongly enough about this issue to make exercise a part of their daily life and work towards goals such as the Australian Masters Games.

"The baby boomer age groups have always had a significant impact on their children and generations following. Displaying a positive and fun approach to ongoing physical activity, general health and wellbeing can impact the way future generations will view physical activity and healthy competition.

"First timers are welcome with minimal levels of training required to compete. All you need is a lot of enthusiasm and a good sense of fun. The only restriction is the age requirement which, for the majority of sports is 30 years and over."

The 13th Australian Masters Games are being held from 7th to 13th October 2011.
