Marysville celebrates aquatic facility reopening
The iconic Cumberland Resort swimming pool and day spa in Marysville has reopened as the YMCA Marysville.
The aquatic facility is again available to the communities of Marysville, Narbethong, Granton, Buxton, Taggerty and the wider Triangle region, after a recent agreement between YMCA Victoria and the owners; Simon and Ann Cuzens that has been backed by generous funding from three Rotary clubs, The Salvation Army, YMCA Open Doors, and the support of Murrindindi Shire Council and Department of Human Services Community Hub Marysville.
The pool and spa were the only facilities on the Cumberland Resort property to survive the devastation of the Black Saturday firestorm in February 2009. After the successful reopening of the local outdoor pool over summer, a partnership proposal was developed with a number of stakeholders to reopen the indoor heated pool to be used in the winter months.
Simon and Ann Cuzens and YMCA Victoria have entered into a partnership with the community with the aim of providing an indoor aquatic facility with aquatic education, programs and services.
As Ann Cuzens explains âthe pool facilities are too good not to be used, particularly in the present circumstances that the community finds itself in. We are just happy that through the YMCA the facilities can be available to the community.?
Speaking at the reopening on Sunday 6th June, YMCA Regional Executive Officer, Anthony Neal said âtoday is a significant day for the community and the stakeholders in this project who have worked hard to make this a reality for the Marysville community. It seems fitting that we open YMCA Maryville on the 6th June being the same date the first YMCA was founded back in 1844 in London.?
The YMCA Marysville features a 20 metre pool, steam room and will offer lap swimming, Aqua Aerobics, Aquatic education and schools programs. The centre will open six days per week, closed on Sundays. The YMCA is a community based charity that builds strong people families and communities, largely through recreational opportunities and strongly advocates for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy healthy and active lives.
