Man dies from suspected drug overdose after attending Sydney's Transmission Festival
A 26-year-old man has died after attending the Transmission music festival held within Sydney’s showgrounds on Saturday 11th February.
12 other festival goers were also taken to hospital for treatment relating to drug use.
Police say the 26-year-old man died after presenting himself to Bankstown Hospital about 1:30am on Sunday morning.
"About 3am on Sunday … officers from Bankstown Police Area Command were called to Bankstown Hospital to investigate the circumstances of the death of a 26-year-old man," NSW Police said in a statement.
"Police were told the man — who had earlier attended the music festival — presented at the hospital just before 1:30am for a suspected drug overdose."
The large-scale indoor trance festival was headlined by Dutch producer Armin van Buuren and was attended by more than 18,000 people.
The running time of the indoor show on 11th February was from 3pm to 12am.
More than 130 festival-goers were treated at the venue for issues related to drug use and heat exhaustion.
There was a large police and security presence at the festival, which was deemed a "high-risk event" under the NSW Music Festivals Act introduced in 2019.
The Act directs festival organisers to prepare safety management plans if events are determined to be high-risk, and followed a series of overdose deaths and hospitalisations.
Separately, police say they arrested and charged six men aged between 19 and 33 with drug supply offences after they were allegedly caught with MDMA.
A 23-year-old Oran Park man was allegedly in possession of 253 MDMA tablets, while a 21-year-old Fairfield West man was allegedly found with 149 MDMA tablets.
The 23-year-old was refused bail after appearing at Parramatta court on Sunday, while the 21-year-old was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local court on Thursday.
The other four men were issued court attendance notices for supplying a prohibited drug and are due to appear at court at a later date.
Investigations into the 26-year-old man's death remain ongoing. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
