Major waterfront project planned for Port Hedland foreshore
A major waterfront project is to revitalise the foreshore in Port Hedland following a $152 miilion commitment from the Western Australian Government and the Town of Port Hedland.
The Spoilbank Marina Precinct scheme, which will include a new marina with up to 250 boat pens, is part of the the Pilbara Cities initiative which aims to revitalise Port Hedland into a city of 50,000 people. The foreshore development will also include a boat lifter and hardstand; land for boat repairs and service; a refuelling jetty; restaurants; bars; event spaces; a water play area; and an adjacent caravan park.
Western Australian Government support worth $112 million has been provided towards the creation of the Spoilbank Marina Precinct - described as a "welcome addition to the landscape".
Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett explained "Port Hedland's underutilised foreshore will become a landmark attraction providing residents and visitors the opportunity to take advantage of the region's outdoor lifestyle.
"I'm delighted the Government and Town of Port Hedland are working together to deliver a development that current and future residents will be proud of."
Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls added "we expect the development to act as a catalyst for further private sector investment in the broader Port Hedland foreshore area."
Work is expected to start on the detailed design of the project later this year, with completion scheduled for 2016/17.
