Mackay multi-purpose indoor stadium moves forward
With plans finalised, contractors are now being selected to construct a new multi-purpose stadium and upgrade existing amenities at Mackay Basketball's Candlestick Park.
Rising construction costs and a tight budget have resulted in some changes to the initial plans, but the Mackay Basketball's Building Committee remained confident of delivering a first class multi-sports facility.
Mackay Basketball Building Committee Chair Nigel Thomas said a constrained budget hampered the scope of work, explaining "there have been many hours of discussions with the Project Managers in a concerted effort to deliver this facility within the $6.4 million budget."
Thomas said the project works will be delivered in stages, resulting from some "tough decisions" having been made.
The major part of the works includes the completion of an open-plan stadium with three indoor multi-purpose competition courts, additional toilets, dressing rooms and a refurbishment of the existing amenities and offices at Candlestick Park Stadium.
The Federal Government's Department of Regional Australia, Local Government, Arts and Sport has committed $6 million to the multi-sports stadium under the Community Infrastructure Grants program.
The Queensland Government's Department of Sports and Recreation has committed co- funding of $300,000 to upgrade the existing amenities and front office area. Mackay Basketball Incorporated is also financially committed to co-funding the upgrade.
Mackay Regional Council has been very supportive of the project, with Mackay Basketball having access to useful resources and competent personnel, from which to draw assistance andknowledge, throughout the process.
Thomas adds "the support of council is appreciated to help deliver a facility that will have a variety of community uses.
"We are looking to provide the maximum quantity of seating within the budget, which would provide approximately 1750 seating capacity. However, we may be constrained by costs to reduce that number initially. Seating capacity is an important factor for the success of the facility and we shall prioritise this within the project.
"We are working hard with all parties to achieve our focus to deliver a facility that will benefit the sporting community and add value to the Mackay sporting precinct."
Project Managers Davis Langdon are currently finalising the tender documents and it is planned for the construction contract to be awarded in late May or early June 2012.
