Logan City Council begins restoring playgrounds and park trails impacted by recent floods

With more than 230 of Logan City’s 958 parks flooded or affected by the recent extensive rain, Council has now commenced a recovery program to restore playgrounds, facilities, pathways and trails in the city’s parks.

An extended mowing program, which now includes Saturdays, has also has been introduced.

City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said while Council’s main recovery focus was on residents and business impacted by the floods, Council understood the importance of parks and greenspaces to the community. He asks for everyone to be patient as they work through what is required to make the facilities clean and safe again.

Mayor Power notes “some parks were significantly damaged by floodwaters and restoring them is going to take a while. The first job is to clean up debris and wash away mud and that work has already started.

“But in some cases, replacement equipment and materials will need to be sourced and these often take months to be delivered.”

In the short-term, residents should avoid entering parks where flood damage is still evident. Parents and carers should also ensure they also have mosquito repellent and antiseptic wipes on hand when using reopened parks.

Those who have booked events in a City of Logan park in the upcoming weeks are urged to contact Council on 3412 3412 to check on the park’s status.

Other flood recovery-related developments in the City of Logan include:

• Council’s Flood Recovery Financial Assistance Package has been launched which includes a $250 rates rebate for those residential properties inundated by riverine flooding.

• A $300,000 support package for small business

• A boost to grants for wildlife carers and a free trees program for landowners adjacent to waterways

• An intensive and targeted public health campaign to quickly tackle the threat of mosquito-borne viruses.
