Lia Finocchiaro appointed Sport, Recreation and Racing Minister in Northern Territory

Changes of Ministerial responsibilities in the Northern Territory have seen Country Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly, Lia Finocchiaro appointed Minister for Sport and Recreation, Racing, Young Territorians, Senior Territorians and Statehood.
Minister Finocchiaro takes some of the Ministerial roles previously held by Matthew 'Matt' Conlan who, since September last year, had been Minister for the Territory's five leisure portfolios.
One of Minister Finocchiaro's first acts as Minister has been the opening of the Northern Territory Government's Sport Education Forum in Alice Springs over the weekend.
The series of free forums assist sporting clubs and coaches to build the capacity of their sports and improve participation experiences for athletes from the grass roots to elite levels.
Minister Finocchiaro explained "as the new Minister for Sport and Recreation (this is) a perfect opportunity to meet the people who are at the forefront of developing sport in the Northern Territory.
"The theme of this year's forums, 'Higher, Faster, Stronger' represents the key outcomes Territory clubs, coaches and athletes should be striving for.
"The Sport Education Forums will assist individuals and clubs who have a passion for developing athletes along a pathway of life-long involvement in sport.
"Coaches will hear how to enhance their technical skill development and will be exposed to current best practice coaching methods across a range of topics that are practical to implement into any coaching environment.
"The sport forums will also include club development sessions to assist administrators in attracting volunteers, improving the effectiveness of committees and ensuring that sporting clubs are inclusive for all Territorians.
"The Northern Territory Government is committed to increasing opportunities for Territorians to become involved in sport. We know sport is important, not just for its health benefits, but for keeping our communities strong."
The free Sport Education Forums are open to coaches, managers, development officers, community sport and recreation officers, fitness trainers, administrators and teachers.
The forums were held in Alice Springs from 7th to 10th March and will be held in Katherine from 18th to 20th March and in Darwin from 21st to 24th March.
