Last act for Stereosonic Music Festival?
The owners of the Stereosonic music festival are understood to have halted future events following two drug-related deaths in late 2015.
Stereosonic organisers were criticised for not doing enough to ensure patron safety after the deaths of Sylvia Choi, aged 25, at the Sydney festival and Stefan Woodward, aged 19, at the Adelaide event.
Both died of drug overdoses during Stereosonic’s 2015 events, which were held in five capital cities nationally in November and December.
The two companies behind the electronic music festival, Totem Onelove and SFX Entertainment, have not confirmed its cancellation or commented on the rumours.
SFX bought Stereosonic in 2013 for $75 million but filed for bankruptcy in the US earlier this year following a reshuffling of the business and downsizing.
Media inquiries to the organisers have not yielded a response while it has been reported that the event’s
Melbourne office is now empty and for lease.
as for lease on realcommercial.com.au. Photos of the building on the website show Stereosonic and Creamfields posters on the wall.
Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph has reported “all the core team behind Stereosonic have left SFX and there’s hardly anyone left to put on the festival.
“Plus SFX is dealing with bankruptcy in the US with the CEO Robert Sillerman gone and the business in disarray, it seems unlikely the festival will return.”
Earlier this year, NSW Premier Mike Baird threatened to shut down music festivals which don’t improve their safety standards and reduce drug taking by fans.
