Lake Wanaka Ready for Ski Season
Lake Wanaka has launched a range of new developments for the 2008 winter season ranging from multi-million investments at its four alpine resorts to new infrastructure in the town itself.
Cardrona Alpine Resort is installing a new high speed detachable quad chairlift, new snowmaking and a new restaurant in its Captain's Basin area. The new chairlift will cut the lift time by almost two thirds with the journey now taking just over three minutes compared to the previous nine minutes. Snowmaking at Cardrona is expanding from the Main Basin to Captain's Basin with the installation of 13 snow guns to supplement the ski area's renowned natural snow base and providing peace of mind for early season visitors. Even more skiers and boarders will now be able to enjoy the famous Captain's pizzas with the advent of a new expanded pizzeria with over double the capacity.
Snow Park NZ has redeveloped many of its world-class features as it continues its reign as the only dedicated terrain park resort in Australasia. Improvements include a new Slopestyle lane featuring skilfully crafted intermediate jumps and jibs and a redeveloped Half Pint Park, dedicated to beginners.
Lake Wanaka can also now boast regular night skiing and riding as Snow Park NZ switches on the floodlights for two evenings a week.
Trail enhancements, snowmaking and a new beginners programme marks developments at Treble Cone for 2008. The Saddle Basin will feature wider groomed trails tilted to the south to help retain snow. New state-of-the-art snow guns will enhance snow conditions in the Home Basin and the resort introduces the internationally renowned Burton Learn to Ride programme for beginner snowboarders.
Visitors to Snow Farm can experience a night in the wilderness in a back country musterers' hut following the redevelopment of Meadows Hut. An easy ski along the Nordic tracks, the hut is nestled into a sheltered gully and can sleep up to twenty with a fire for cooking and an outside BBQ. It's also the ideal lunch stop for day skiers enjoying New Zealand's only Nordic ski area.
