Lake Macquarie’s Toronto Baths reopened for summer
A $1.4 million upgrade to the historic Toronto Baths has been completed in time for the peak swimming season, with the facility now fully enclosed and more accessible.
The Toronto Baths Accessibility and safety upgrades project includes a new accessibility ramp into the water, new jetty decking and netting around the baths.
Commenting on the improved amenity, Lake Macquarie Mayor, Adam Shultz stated “it’s fantastic to see these upgrades completed in time for summer.
“This facility is going to be very popular for thousands of residents and visitors to Lake Macquarie over the coming months, providing the perfect spot for families and friends to gather and enjoy quality time together.”
“We are very passionate about building an inclusive city, and making the baths more accessible means everyone can enjoy our wonderful facility.”
With the NSW Government having contributed $1 million to the project as part of their Places to Swim program, NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully added “the historic baths will retain their charm and will be enhanced by these upgrades making them more accessible for the public to enjoy a safer place to swim.”
Toronto Early Swimmers Club member Bevan McGregor, who uses the baths almost every day, said club members were very happy with the upgrades.
McGregor noted “it looks very nice and the new ramp is very popular with less mobile members.”
The NSW Government’s Places to Swim program is connecting people to water in places that need it the most, creating better access to get in, on and around inland waterways across NSW through a $16.7 million commitment to high quality open space.
Together with the NSW Government, Lake Macquarie City Council is delivering infrastructure that is essential for communities, increasing access to water for recreation across the state.
Toronto Baths are located on the shores of Lake Macquarie on the NSW Central Coast.
