Kiama Council urges water safety following two drownings

Kiama Council Mayor Cameron McDonald has urged safe use of beaches and waterways after two drownings this holiday season.

A drowning was reported at south Bombo Beach yesterday evening. This comes after Kiama Council’s beach lifeguards attended the rescue of a holidaymaker at Werri Beach, Gerringong, alongside paramedics and other helpers on 21st December. Unfortunately the person was declared deceased at the scene.

Council and the Mayor have sent condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

Mayor McDonald shared "we urge all visitors and locals to follow safety guidelines when they're in or around the water. Use our patrolled beaches, swim between the flags and always listen to instructions from our Lifeguards and volunteer Lifesavers.

"Our Lifeguards are professionals. Take their advice and instructions seriously and do what you are asked. Read the signs. Know your personal abilities and limitations. Don't take unnecessary risks.

On the Bombo Beach drowning Mayor McDonald noted "It's a terrible tragedy when someone loses their life and the toll on our staff and others who help out is enormous. In this instance, unfortunately, the person went into the water after the flags were removed for the day and got caught in a strong rip. Council Lifeguards administered CPR and emergency services also attended the scene but the person was unresponsive. We thank everyone who helped out.

"We want everyone to be able to safely enjoy our wonderful beaches and waterways, but it's a fact that many of them do have strong rips and currents."

"It's so important that beach and water users read the signs and follow instructions and safety guidelines. As well as swim and surf safety, wear a life jacket if you're in watercraft and stick to the designated areas. Don't hit the water after a few drinks and don't go in alone. Take precautions and wear lifejackets on our rock shelves, where freak waves can occur. Any and all of these things could help prevent another tragedy.”
