Kangaroo Island’s accessible boardwalk at Remarkable Rocks now open

Upgrades are now complete to the accessible boardwalk at Kangaroo Island’s Remarkable Rocks - finished in time for the Christmas school holidays.

The formation of the Remarkable Rocks began over 500 million years ago with the large granite boulders now perched high above the sea in the lush Flinders Chase National Park. Famous for their unusual shapes and their astounding sizes the rocks attract thousands of visitors a year.

Part of the South Australian Government’s $52 million investment in rebuilding essential parks infrastructure to support and rejuvenate the island’s visitor economy, the upgrades at Remarkable Rocks include an expanded carpark with improved carpark accessibility, traffic flow and separation from pedestrians with 41 standard carparks, six new long vehicle bays and three dedicated bus carparks, accessible facilities and new interpretive signage.

Coastal heath vegetation at the site is also recovering after the 2019-20 summer bushfires burnt 96% of Flinders Chase National Park and the Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area.

South Australian Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said he was pleased to be able to open the new accessible boardwalk and noted “it caps off the final rebuild and upgrades to this site, helping in the rejuvenation of the tourism industry and rebuilding of key visitor infrastructure essential for the economic, social, and environmental recovery of the island and its community.

“While this marks the completion of works at Remarkable Rocks, upgrades are still underway at many other sites across the island as part of the Marshall Liberal Government’s $52 million of works to rebuild and reimagine Kangaroo Island’s nature-based tourism economy.

“These works are helping to highlight and encourage visitors to experience Kangaroo Island’s spectacular landscapes, enabling both the community and visitors from afar to better enjoy our national parks.

“A huge amount of work has gone into the roll out of these projects, as we can continue to build attractions and encourage people to visit this very unique part of the state, with the Kangaroo Island tourism industry contributing around $140 million annually.
