International sport grants now available
Support from the Australian Government will allow African and East Timorese children the chance to participate in sport and physical activity programs that aim to achieve development priorities through sport.
Federal Minister for Sport Mark Arbib said the Australian Sports Outreach Program (ASOP) would provide government, non-government and community-based organisations with financial support of up to $20,000.
"The Australian Government believes increased participation in sport and physical activity can transcend cultures and teach children positive values, such as teamwork and harmony.
"We want our international partners in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America to benefit from increased access to participation in sport and physical activity."
In the past, the grants program has achieved increased and sustained participation in sport and physical activity by adolescents and people with disabilities, health promotion and the provision of equal opportunities to be involved.
Senator Arbib added "the ASOP Targeted Countries Sport Development Grants will enable communities to promote social inclusion and cohesion, foster healthy behaviours, and provide education and leadership opportunities for young men and women."
Applications for the ASOP Targeted Countries Sport Development Grants are now open and will close on Friday 2nd September.
Successful applicants will be announced from October 2011.
ASOP is jointly operated by the Australian Sports Commission, AusAID and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
