India to build World's largest cricket stadium
India's ever increasing dominance of the business side of cricket is set to see the building of the world's largest cricket stadium.
The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) has unveiled plans to build a new stadium in to Chennai, with a seating capacity of more than 100,000.
Set to be built for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the stadium is planned for a 50-acre site in the Kanchipuram district, 25 kilometres from the Indian city of Chennai. Set to include a retractable roof to avoid washouts, the new stadium will double the seating capacity of Chennai's current MA Chidambaram stadium.
Speaking to Times of India, TNCA's President, N Srnivasan, stated, "the Government has leased out the land to us for 30 years and we have remitted Rs 1 lakh as payment."
TNCA's Honorary Secretary, KS Viswanathan, added that although the stadium's capacity will be more than Eden Garden in Kolkata (the former Calcutta), or the Melbourne Cricket Ground, an exact figure has yet to be determined.
