Hyclor Commercial Launches Advanced Open Cell Filter Media
Following on from their launch month in December, Hyclor Commercial have announced the arrival of a new product from the leaders of aquaculture innovation and developers of open cell filtration media in the UK.
Evolution Aqua have appointed Hyclor as the exclusive Australia/New Zealand distributor of the latest additions to their 'K' range of filter medias.
Engineered and manufactured in the UK, 'K+' open cell media is designed for faster filter maturation, which is made possible by the advanced manufacturing technologies developed by Evolution Aqua.
During the extrusion process, a proprietary blend of minerals are added, along with magnesium, calcium, enzymes and salt to the raw material that is used to manufacture K+Media. The result being that K+Media will mature much faster than many other, less advanced, types of media on the market today.
K+Media's features include:
The addition of these minerals creates a rough surface on the media. This textured surface has a microscopic honeycomb of peaks and craters that allow waste particles to collect, and nitrifying bacteria to form.
The minerals act as a food source for the bacteria, helping the bacteria to develop and multiply at a faster rate, further improving maturation times.
Calcium alone has proven advantages for developing and maintaining effective bio-films.
The enzymes that are added also help to make the media ‘sticky’ so waste particles can adhere to media easier.
Salt is added during the extrusion process, which dissolves during the cooling process, leaving a rough surface on which bio-film can easily adhere.
With a new shape and profile, K+Media has also been designed to have an increased and class leading surface area, meaning an overall surface area of 1350 metre² per metre³.
More importantly for biological filtration, the protected surface area of K+Media is 1,025 metre² per metre³. This allows a stable bio-film to form and remain intact when used in moving bed biological filtration.
The expansive surface area and improved design also means that, as a mechanical filter, K+ Media also benefits from the class leading protected surface area to become a filter media with tremendous potential.
K+Media is available in both floating and sinking versions and the sinking version has already been awarded climate care certification, independently attesting to its ability to save on water and energy costs.
