Hordern Pavilion honoured as Venue of the Year 2018 at The Industry Observer Awards

Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion has been named ‘Venue of the Year’ at the inaugural Industry Observer Awards.

Playbill Venues Management Chief Executive Michael Nebenzahl said the Industry Observer accolade was such an honour because the award is determined via a public vote.

Nebenzahl advised “thank you to everyone who voted for the Hordern.

“It’s heartening to see this iconic Sydney venue is still a crowd favourite across Australia.

“The award category was open to every live venue and voter and the Hordern claimed its rightful position at the heart of our country’s live music and entertainment scene.”

Playbill Venues has successfully managed the Hordern Pavilion and the adjacent Royal Hall of Industries at Moore Park for the past 18 years. In this time, Playbill Venues has hosted thousands of gigs and events, including the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Party and OzHarvest’s inspiring fundraiser, the CEO CookOff.

This year, the Mardi Gras Party attracted over 15,000 revellers, reflecting the biggest crowd since 2012 and the greatest box office in the history of the event.

At the CEO CookOff. business leaders joined top chefs to create a gourmet dinner and then serve it to more than 1,000 of Sydney’s homeless and disadvantaged people on site.

Joining the action, Nebenzahl said Playbill Venues was proud to provide the venue and event management support for such a magical and dignified fundraiser.

He added “we were all humbled by the experience.

He believes the rich culture and heritage of the historic venues at Moore Park should be preserved and enhanced for future generations.

“The Hordern is woven into the social and cultural fabric of our community. People recall with great nostalgia the gigs and events they’ve experienced there over the years. Artists refer to the importance of the Hordern as a launching pad for their careers.

“International acts rave about returning to the Hordern. It is a well-known epicentre of Australia’s live music and entertainment scene.

“As more live music venues disappear from our cities to make way for retail and high-rise apartments, it’s increasingly important to protect and reinvigorate our remaining social and community assets so locals and visitors alike can enjoy them.

“We’d like to restore and enhance the Hordern so it remains the people’s favourite for generations to come.”
