High performance fitness room enhances squash facility

The Blu Health & Rackets Club in Moorabbin, Victoria has introduced a new high performance training room utilising the state of the art Wattbike.

Dubbed the ‘Hurt Locker’, the room offers training for athletes based on a personalised strength assessment.

The introduction of the Hurt Locker is part a plan by former squash professional Todd Bowden to make squash courts profitable.

Bowden, the Director of Blu Project Management, has developed and implemented an operational business model to build and run squash courts and turn them into thriving businesses.

Bowden believes that squash is experiencing a resurgence and has developed a business model for improving the profile of the game, renovating existing squash facilities, or building new ones, in targeted locations and developing and sustaining corporate leagues in city centres and a community-based approach in the suburbs.

Bowden explains “squash is a popular sport amongst high earners and business people because it is quick and convenient, allowing time-poor people to complete a total workout in a fun, social environment.”

Bowden adds “other services desired by high earners are also included in the model, such as strength and conditioning programs for golfers, triathletes and cyclists, Pilates and yoga, all incorporated in the same facility.

“A busy and successful squash facility can be developed in a very small space.”

Bowden sees that squash facilities can operates in shopping centres, office developments, residential subdivisions or high rise buildings, stating “we can show businesses how to build, operate and make money off squash courts – especially in small spaces.

“It’s all about making every square metre of a business profitable and maximising commercial returns (providing) a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere yet satisfy time poor people with a complete fitness work out."

The Wattbike is distributed in Australia by Summit Fitness.

Endorsed by Cycling Australia and already used by top sporting organisations such as the AFL, NFL and Cricket Australia, Wattbike is the first and only indoor bike to successfully replicate the sensation of riding on road or track
