Heavy weight partnership to inspire future Olympians

The Papatoetoe Sports and Community Charitable Trust and the Papatoetoe Olympic Weightlifting Club have announced the signing of an agreement to formally adopt the Club as the 12th community group to be based at the Papatoetoe Sports Centre.

Established in July 2012 with just three members, The Papatoetoe Olympic Weightlifting Club (POWC) has grown quickly and now has 150 young people experiencing the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.

Head Coach Simon Kent explains "sport doesn't build character, sport reveals character. The Club's environment aims to grow quality people using the sport of Olympic Weightlifting as the vehicle to do this. Success for members is being the best they can be."

Joe Pomelile is a positive example of what can be achieved when commitment and hard work are brought together.

Pomelile, a former Aorere College student currently combines seven training sessions a week while studying physiotherapy at AUT.

He has recently been selected to represent New Zealand at the 2013 Oceania Championships to be held in Brisbane in July alongside two fellow club members, Layne Parkes and Aimaasu Ah-Voa.

Kent has also been named as one of five Coaches for the NZ Oceania Championships Team.

Papatoetoe Sports and Community Charitable Trust General Manager Justin Leydesdorff adds "we love what this club stands for in teaching young people discipline, commitment and personal achievement through sport."

The Papatoetoe Sports and Community Charitable Trust provide sport and recreation services from Papatoetoe Sport Centre.

Facilities at the Centre include an international hockey turf, six tennis courts, indoor cricket centre, bowling greens, strength training facilities, cricket, football and rugby fields, a bar and bistro, and multi-purpose meeting and function rooms.
