Heart Foundation opens entries for Healthy Community Awards

Entries are now open for the Heart Foundation Healthy Community Awards 2011. Previously known as the Local Government Awards, these new look awards recognise Councils for their contribution to improving heart health and aim to encourage their ongoing commitment to creating healthy communities.
Any Council working to improve the health of their community is invited to submit an entry for these awards. Winners will be awarded at both the state and national levels, with $38,000 in cash awards on offer.
Council initiatives addressing some or all of the following important elements of a healthy community are recognised by the Heart Foundation Healthy Community Awards:
ï¾ Opportunities for recreational and incidental physical activity;
ï¾ Safe, connected walkable catchments;
ï¾ Accessible, safe and appealing environments and facilities that encourage healthy lifestyles;
ï¾ Access to affordable healthy foods;
ï¾ Smoke-free environments;
ï¾ Opportunities for community members to lead interactive and socially connected lives;
ï¾ Appropriate, well designed and maintained infrastructure that supports recreation, social interaction and active transport options.
Entries must be received by 5pm on Friday 27th May 2011.
