Healthy appetite for wellness apps

According to the US National Centre for Health Statistics, more than one-half of Americans have looked up health information online within the past yearâand many are using their mobile devices to do so.
Nearly one-half of iPhone users, as well as 30% of iPod touch users, have made a health-related inquiry on their device, based on data from mobile ad network Greystripe. A majority of those who do use their device for health inquiries also have a health-related application installed.
Fitness apps were the most prevalent among both groups. Three in 10 iPhone users had a diet app or other medical app, while 10% had an app devoted to a specific condition.
iPhone users were much more likely to access sites for specific conditions via a PC, though not much more likely overall to use the Internet for health purposes.
The most popular health-related search on a mobile device among iPhone and iPod touch users was for outdoor activities, but fitness centers, pharmacies and doctors were also sought out by more than three in 10 respondents. More than one-quarter of iPhone users had searched for a hospital on their device.
