Hamilton Council to gift Clarence Street Theatre to community trust
Hamilton City Council has voted in favour of pursuing a proposal to gift ownership of its Clarence St Theatre to a community trust.
Sean Murray, Council’s General Manager of Events and Economic Development, says during 2013’s Theatres Review, Council identified a need to reduce its theatre assets, with The Meteor subsequently gifted to a community trust.
Representatives of Hamilton’s arts and theatre community presented Council with a proposal to take over operation of the theatre and turn it into a performing arts hub for the city and the region.
Murray explained “Council has authorised staff to negotiate terms with the trust for the transfer of ownership of the theatre, with a view to brokering an arrangement equitable to that which saw The Meteor gifted to the 1 Victoria Trust."
Once negotiations have been completed, staff will report back to Council in February 2015 so Council can approve the arrangement which has been brokered.
