Hall of Fame for SA sports

South Australia is to have its own Sports Hall of Fame and Legends of Sport categories linked to a comprehensive awards program.

Sport SA Chief Executive Jan Sutherland says "these Awards, and in particular the Sports Hall of Fame, have been a long time coming but with the support of our members comprising 140 State and sporting organisations representing 750,000 participants our program is now up and running.

"We have the perfect vehicle to showcase sport which is a mandatory requirement within our Charter and in so doing we are able to preserve our sporting heritage and ensure our future."

Sutherland said that SA now comes in line with other Australian States and Territories that host award programs.

The award categories include the Athlete of the Year, Disabled Athlete of the Year, Team of the Year, Junior Athlete, Coach, Volunteer, Official, Administrator, Event of the Year and Country Athlete of the Year.

A regional program also is being undertaken with details to be announced at a later date.
