Golden Oldies owner confirms global rugby festival for 2023

Golden Oldies owner Bruce Mactaggart has today announced the Golden Oldies Rugby Festival will take place in Perth, Western Australia from 19th to 26th March 2023.

The event is supported by the Western Australian Government, through Tourism WA and is anticipated to attract about 2,000 out-of-state visitors and inject about $5.7 million into the economy.

Golden Oldies is a series of global sports festivals for recreational and social players aged 35+. Spanning more than 40 years, Golden Oldies have attracted over 150 000 participants to 80 festivals.

Today’s Golden Oldies Rugby announcement follows on from news the iconic sports franchise made earlier in the year, confirming the Golden Oldies Hockey, Netball and Cricket festivals were proceeding for 2022.

Mactaggart, an Australian national who now resides in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, said he was thrilled to announce Perth as the host destination for 2023.

“Rugby is synonymous with Australia and New Zealand, it’s a real pleasure to be able to kickstart the future of our rugby festivals ‘Down Under’. Perth has a great sports park (Langley Park) and world class tourism experiences, so we expect to see teams from all around the world join us for an unforgettable week of rugby and fun.”

Western Australian Government Tourism Minister Roger Cook said securing the Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival is an important part of Tourism WA’s work to build an exciting calendar of events for the coming years.

Minister Cook enthused “I’m excited to welcome this event back to WA for the first time since 1991. Any returning players to the State are sure to notice how much more our city and State now offers visitors.”
