Gold Coast AFL Licence Ignited by Stadium Upgrade
The Gold Coast's dream of a redeveloped AFL Stadium at Carrara is a step closer with the Queensland Government committing $60 million towards the $130 million stadium development.
The State and the AFL have also agreed a Memorandum of Agreement for the development.
As Queensland Premier Anna Bligh explained "our decision to put $60 million toward a Gold Coast Stadium's redevelopment has been the catalyst for the AFL to now offer its 17th playing licence to the Gold Coast.
"Conditions of our support are that the Gold Coast City Council comes to the party with the land and that the Commonwealth, or some other body, completes the funding support backing this exciting job-creating magnet.
"The GC17 (consortium) and its band of supporters and the AFL have worked hard for this day (and the) venture will deliver a massive boost for the local economy."
The stadium will be a 23,000 seat facility with an additional 2,000 standing capacity while the 175 metre by 128 metre playing oval will be able to accommodate an international standard cricket oval, athletics field and other sports.
