Global Tour Marks Melbourne Cup's 150th Anniversary

The 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy has embarked on an ambitious global tour in advance of the 150th running of the famous November race.

The iconic trophy's international journey will take it to Tokyo, Los Angeles, London, Shanghai, Singapore, Mumbai, Dubai, Hong Kong and Auckland for a series of events and activities to celebrate and promote Australia's greatest racing and cultural event.

The initiatives aim to leave a legacy by which future racegoers can remember the 150th Melbourne Cup year. In September, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) will also open a new Visitor Centre at Flemington showcasing Flemington's Walk of Fame and the development of a Heritage Trail along which tours can be conducted through the heritage listed Flemington Racecourse. The initiative will be complemented by an educational website launched by Curriculum Corporation highlighting the importance of the social and historical context of the Melbourne Cup.

The 150th Melbourne Cup year celebration will also include photographic exhibitions and members' events at Grossi Florentino - one of Melbourne's finest Italian restaurants along with regional gallery visits tying in with the Melbourne Cup.

Other initiatives will include a symposium to be conducted in Canberra; a Royal Australian Mint coin and a stamp release from Australia Post; and a limited run of 150th memorabilia items and collectables.

All activities will act as a pre-cursor to the 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup race.
