Gala Concert to celebrate Albany Entertainment Centre opening

A gala concert featuring more than 200 local artists will be held on 11th December to mark the official opening of Albany's newly constructed entertainment centre.

The $70 million venue houses a 620-seat, state-of-the-art theatre, a flexible 200-seat studio and a cafe overlooking Princess Royal Harbour.

Performers at the opening day include local choirs and orchestras.

Western Australian Minister for Culture and the Arts, John Day, says the centre will open up a range of opportunities for the City of Albany, stating "the Albany Entertainment Centre has been many years in coming and is much anticipated I know but it is certainly a big event in the development of Albany and certainly for the performing arts in the great southern region, so I'm sure it will be the location of many interesting and exciting performances in future years."

Albany Mayor Milton Evans says the Albany Entertainment Centre will benefit the community, adding "the end result is going to be fabulous for Albany, it's going to be great for the region, but more importantly it's going to be good for culture and arts ... and a community that is devoid of culture and arts is a poor one indeed."

The public had their first look inside the new venue during a sold-out simulcast of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's Perth concert on 14th November.

Garry Snowdon, the outgoing manager of the Playhouse Theatre in Perth for nearly 20 years, has been appointed by the Perth Theatre Trust (PTT) to run the venue.

PTT General Manager Alan Ferris said Snowdon, who will be employed by AEG Ogden, had strong leadership and business skills, stating "his extensive venue management experience and strong theatrical technical skills will be invaluable as we work towards the opening of the centre in December."

The Albany Entertainment Centre is featured in the November/December 2010 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
