Future secured for Wollongong’s King George V Park
The future of Wollongong’s King George V Park has been secured following Council’s adoption of the Park’s Recreation Master Plan following an extensive engagement with the community ensuring the plan reflects and caters to the needs of a diverse community.
New sporting amenities including contemporary gender-neutral change rooms, new carpark, an expanded play space, upgraded picnic facilities, connecting pathways, and native grass planting are all part of the vision for Port Kembla’s King George V Park.
There will also be a viewing vantage point of the coast with seating and integrated artwork.
Children and families will have more space to play, with the Plan including an expanded play area which incorporate the adjoining hill for exciting adventure opportunities. A new multi sports area will be created, transforming the existing hardcourt area with new fencing, seating and shelters while Council will continue to explore opportunities for a local level skate facility.
Wollongong City Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery advised “we heard from a range of users of the park including Port Kembla residents, Aboriginal Elders and community members, sporting groups, local schools, and community groups such as our Bushcare volunteers. This helped us refine the plan, so it reflects and caters to the needs of our diverse community.”
The draft Master Plan was developed following initial community engagement in October and November 2020. The community’s aspirations directly informed the Plan’s content. This draft Plan was then placed on public exhibition between February and March 2021 for feedback as well as a series of community engagement initiatives.
Lord Mayor Bradbery added “the new features will help improve the park and make visits - whether that’s strolling through, playing a game of basketball or having an outdoor family picnic – much easier and more enjoyable for those who live in the community around it as well as those further afield.
“There is also a focus on ensuring safe and accessible movements around the area with new connecting paths in the park, pedestrian safety measures and a shared path along Military Road. We will also explore skate facility options and ways to retain existing bush care native shade trees.”
“We know that the Port Kembla area has a strong Aboriginal cultural heritage and we will be working together with the Aboriginal community to deliver the plan. There is a lot to look forward to with the future of much-loved King George V park and we’re excited to see the plan come to life for our community and visitors to enjoy.”
